WASHINGTON - A team from Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz that drafted key components of the federal government's bailout plan for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae did the work on a pro bono basis.

Partner Harold Novikoff said that the final document was drafted during 2 1/2 weeks before the plan was announced and that the process included "endless term sheets, and almost endless drafts."

In an e-mail, Mr. Novikoff said the firm did not charge for its services.

"We believe the matter to be of supreme importance to the nation and the capital markets," he wrote. "Therefore, we were pleased and privileged to assist the United States Treasury."
