This year's Cornerstone Awards for pro bono services, given by the Lawyers Alliance of New York, went to two institutions and 10 individual attorneys from private firms and in-house corporate legal departments during an evening ceremony on Dec. 13 hosted by Pfizer, Inc., at the pharmaceutical company's East 42nd Street offices.
Singled out for its wide range of pro bono social services to elderly New Yorkers was Citigroup, Inc. Lawyers Alliance also honored Hughes Hubbard & Reed for what the organization called a "substantial breadth, complexity and significance" of pro bono transactional work on behalf of nonprofit groups.
Individual lawyers honored included Corey S. Biller of Davis & Gilbert; Steve Buffone of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Ellen H. Clark of DLA Piper US; Felicity Fridman of McDermott Will & Emery; Herschel Goldfield of Proskauer Rose; Dennis J. Henderson of Arent Fox; Alan M. Klinger of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan; Matthew W. Mamak of Alston & Bird; Victoria Manthas of Clifford Chance US; and Terri J. Seligman of Loeb & Loeb.
Lawyers Alliance programs are designed to have "maximum impact on our nonprofit clients and the neighborhoods they serve," said board chairman Edward F. Greene, general counsel of Citigroup's global corporate and investment banking group.
The institutions and individuals honored with Cornerstone Awards, said Mr. Greene, "stand out for their deep commitment to the ideals of pro bono."
For the second time, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler has been honored with the annual Partnering for Justice Award, given by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest.
This year, the firm was recognized for continuing pro bono efforts, including the rights of developmentally disabled. John Siffert, board chairman of New York Lawyers, presented Patterson Belknap with the organization's award on Dec. 5 during a ceremony at the firm.
"This year's achievements in partnership with [New York Lawyers] are a great source of pride to all of the firm's attorneys, legal assistants and administrative staff who worked so hard to help bring justice to those in need," said partner Lisa E. Cleary, chairwoman of Patterson Belknap's pro bono committee.
The Academy of Women Leaders at the YWCA of New York City, a network of more than 3,000 professionals, has inducted Elise M. Bloom into its membership.
Ms. Bloom, a partner in Proskauer Rose's labor and employment department, heads the firm's annual Women's Law Forum, which combines social and professional networking with CLE opportunities.
In recognition of his highly successful medical malpractice service, Steven E. Pegalis was honored as distinguished alumnus by his alma mater, New York Law School, during a Dec. 13 gala at the World Financial Center's Winter Garden in lower Manhattan.
Mr. Pegalis, senior partner at Pegalis & Erickson of Lake Success, N.Y., is also a member of New York Law's board of trustees and an adjunct professor at the school.
Among many multi-million-dollar cases, Mr. Pegalis established the state's highest medical malpratice verdict, and the nation's second-highest to date, in the Queens Supreme Court matter of Patel v. NYCHHC, 2476/91. Judgement for $116 million was rendered against the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation on behalf of Mr. Pegalis' client, a brain-injured child.
