The former deputy chief of the criminal division at the Southern District U.S. Attorney's Office has joined Davis Polk & Wardwell as a special counsel for pro bono.

Ronnie Abrams, a federal prosecutor for the past decade, said she had been approached by some firms about becoming a white-collar defense lawyer but that the new position at Davis Polk, where she had been an associate, was more compelling.

"It's a unique opportunity to do justice of another sort," she said.

Ms. Abrams said she would be focused on managing the firm's existing pro bono commitments as well as finding ways to deepen its involvement in large and complex matters.
